Preliminary Video - Reflection Questions

1. What did you find most challenging about recreating your chosen video and why? (Remember to think about story boarding, props, actors, filming, editing, finance)
The most challenging aspect of recreating the video was trying to match the shot exactly to my storyboard and the actual video itself. The reason this was so difficult was due to the lack of space available in the place of shooting our video, we had to squeeze our shots in far more, resulting in inaccurate shots compared to the storyboard/video.
 2. What problems did you face whilst filming? (Consider the logistics; could you get everyone together to film, did you have rehearsal time, were you able to frame your shots effectively, could you convincingly play/mime?)
As discussed above, being able to frame shots effectively was a problem that my group had whilst filming due to the lack of space available in the studio we filmed in compared to the actual video. Another problem that my group faced was being able to mimic (lip-sync) effectively. Members of our group that had to learn lines as well as learn to lip sync them accurately. this was a problem for us and took a number of takes to get right.  Lighting was also a problem with our video, as a number of shot were dimmer or brighter than others. Also, getting hold of equipment and costume was very difficult as we did not have the resources need to match shots. For example, we made do with a large drum base balanced on a pair of chairs to emulate a drum kit.

3. How did you overcome these problems? (did you alter shots/props, solve lighting issues etc?)
We overcame most of these problems by simply shooting more takes until we got one that was right, even though this was time-consuming. In terms of lighting, we attempted to fix the problem as much as we could in post-production when editing the video, change the brightness and contrast ratios of shots that were too dim.
4. Which problems could you not overcome? (Were some instruments harder than others to source, could you recreate the look of an artist, could you dress the set, were some shots impossible to emulate?)
Getting hold of equipment and costume was very difficult as we did not have the resources need to match shots. This was a problem that could not be overcome due to restrictions in time and the place we filmed. For example, we made do with a large drum base balanced on a pair of chairs to emulate a drum kit.

5. What next steps are you going to take? (learn how to: film/edit/light/perform/makeup etc)
Personally, i would like to improve in all areas of film-making, including how to edit comfortably by learning the editing software we are using, I would like to improve on being able to organise shots effectively and be able to get each person involved in the video on their spot and know what they must do. Also, an emphasis on mise-en-scene is needed in order to make a more realistic video. Lighting is one aspect of film-making that me and my group agree to be an important aspect of making the video and therefore being able to use and manipulate lighting effectively is something we feel should be learnt in order to make a video that looks professional.
